Wallet: Has a book of stamps, all the necessary documents like my rabies shot records and whatnot.

List: Four crumpled up lists of things to buy at the store, because in my mind there is just sheer white noise and I’m very susceptible to store displays and shiny things. I need a guideline.

ID Tag: a crappy picture of me on a sparkly clip. I don’t even need it anymore.

Little tissues. For the noses of my people.

Mints: For when my mouth tastes like ass.

Two glasses wipes. For glasses.

Two pairs of reading glasses. For the wipes.

“Good morning, sire, it’s good to have you back. How was Venice?” Patrice asks as I fly past her desk, walking straight into my office, slamming the door behind me.

But that doesn’t stop her. She barges in with hot coffee, making herself comfortable in the black leather chair near my desk. “Okay, spill it. What’s going on?”

“Not now, Patrice,” I reply dismissively, switching on my computer.

In a daze, my eyes are fixed on the blank screen. I’m trying to avoid the inevitable conversation, and trying even harder to ignore her. She sets the cup down on my desk, softening her voice to almost a whisper, asking once again, “Donovan, what’s going on?”

“Don’t you have work to do?” I snap.

“Yes sir, I suppose I do,” she snaps back defensively as she gets up from her chair, mumbling the word asshole under her breath as she heads towards the door.

“I heard that,” I respond, somehow managing to muster up a slight chuckle. “I apologize, alright? Sit back down.”

“Accepted. Now, are you gonna tell me what’s got you in such a pissy mood?”

“In a nutshell…she did it again.”

“She? She who? Scarlett?”

“Yes, Scarlett.”

And there it is. The look that I was trying so hard to avoid. The poor-Donnie, sad-eyed, frowny-faced look that I know I’ll get every single time that I tell this fucking story. Perhaps I can just handle this in one fell swoop, and have Patrice send out a mass memo describing the details of the nightmare-in-Venice, fucking-kill-me-now debacle.

“I don’t get it, Donovan. She was the one that propo….”

“Please, don’t even say it. I really don’t want to get into this right now. Alright?”

“Sure, okay, Donnie. Can I do anything for you?”

She gets up again to leave, but pauses twice before reaching the door. I can see that she’s searching for the right thing to say. Something…anything…to lighten the mood, to cheer me up, to lessen the blow of what Scarlett has done, now twice…as if anything could. But I just want her to leave.

“You know she loves you, right? Do you want me to talk to her? I’m sure I can…”

I interrupt before she can say anything else. “Not another goddamn word about it, understand? Now, I have work to do.”

“Fine, for now. But you’ll have to talk about it at some point, you know.”

I continue to stare at the still-blank computer screen, waving her away.

Defeated, for now, at last she leaves, closing the door behind her.

The clock on the wall seems to be ticking slower than usual. I’ve been here for three hours, and am finding it impossible to concentrate, especially with my cell going off every ten minutes with calls and text messages from Scarlett. I’m not ready to talk to her, and to be honest, I don’t know if I ever will be. I don’t know if I even care at this point. Although I’m slightly curious, I really have no idea what we have to talk about anymore.

I need to get out of this hotel and clear my head. I knew coming here straight from the airport was probably a mistake, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. Better than sitting in that penthouse, alone, with nothing but the all-too-fresh memories of yet another Scarlett-related nightmare to keep me company.

Placing my cell phone in the top drawer of my desk, I change out of my monkey suit and into the spare set of clothes that I keep in the closet of my office. Stopping by Patrice’s desk on my way out, I let her know that I’m leaving for the rest of the day, and that I don’t want to be bothered, by anyone...no matter what’s on fire.

“Are you okay?” she asks, still pushing, hoping for some sort of verbal spillage on the details of my Venetian vacation.

“No, but I will be.”

Here are a few questions asked of AJ Linn, author of The Gentleman’s Series.

Donovan’s search for love has been the basis of the series. When you were developing Scarlett’s character, did you look to celebrities or someone you know personally as inspiration…or is she an embodiment of your own ideal?

-I could never put Scarlett into one simple category. She has elements/characteristics of many different people, but most definitely all created out of my own imagination.

Donovan’s had a few disasters when dating. Which of those crazy ladies did you most enjoy to write and why?

-I would have to say Zoie. The fact that she made up an entire online profile and lied about essentially everything about herself just to meet him was interesting, as well as fun to develop and write.

Aside from Donovan’s bank balance and privileges, you have portrayed him as just an ordinary guy with a genuine and lovable personality. How much of his character is based on imagination and how much is based on AJ Linn?

-Everything about him is fictional. Although, I do enjoy having…Uh, I will stick to my previous answer.

If you had to pick, who would be your favorite character of the series?

-Patrice.

I absolutely love this author. I was introduced to Roni Loren by another favorite author, Tiffany Reisz. I had asked Tiffany what authors she could recommend that wrote book similar to hers. And here we are today. Still love her books.

What do I think about this book? Wow. I am warm all over with a nice fuzzy feeling after reading this book. I think I have run the gamut of feelings. Roni has not let me down, another amazingly well written book about characters I have come to love. Keats or Colby? Both please!

Colby Wilkes is a dream guy with a secret side that only those close to him or at the Ranch know about. Unless you are Georgia, his neighbor. She is on the other side of the glass and has seen more of Colby then she probably should, but she can’t bring herself to look away, ever. I am not sure I could ever if I were her, to be honest. Best part is what is also on the table in the spare room along with the binoculars. Good girl.

Colby and Georgia each have their baggage they bring to the relationship but they work through their issues and become friends first. Georgia has some serious problems to work through BEFORE she can start a relationship but Colby, a school counselor, helps being her down when panic sets in. Perfect set up, right? Enter Adam Keats. A third wheel? Hardly. Colby and Keats have a past that needs to be worked through, Adam is no longer the student he once was and what happened then must be worked through before they can progress into friends. What seems to be a complicated mess actually turns into a beautiful situation but not after a lot of road blocks and hard work.

Typical to Roni, these characters endear themselves to you from the very start. You will fall in love with all three and root for each of them to have a happy ending. Is that possible? You haven’t learned about Georgia’s past that she is running from yet. Does it catch up to her or does she take care of it before it finds her? Colby and Keats are rough on the outside but warm and loving on the inside. Which one does Georgia choose and what does the other man do when he finds out?

The sex in this book is amazing. Roni loves her Ranch and BDSM. The scenes are very tastefully written, romantic and sensual. Reading about a dom and sub and their relationship can make your hairs tingle when done right. Roni does that. And more. Your love of the characters helps.

A definite 5 star for me. I love everything I have read from Roni. She is one of my favorite authors. I know no matter what book of hers it is, I will love it.

Roni wrote her first romance novel at age fifteen when she discovered writing about boys was way easier than actually talking to them. Since then, her flirting skills haven’t improved, but she likes to think her storytelling ability has. After earning a master’s degree in social work from LSU, she worked in a mental hospital, counseled birthmothers as an adoption coordinator, and did management recruiting in her PJs. But she always returned to writing.
Though she’ll forever be a New Orleans girl at heart, she now lives in Dallas with her husband and son. First things first, if you haven’t read the first three books in this series, do yourself a HUGE favor and read them first. You will appreciate everything about this book after reading the first three. You will understand the frustrations, anger, love, excitement and twists and turns that Donovan has had to endure to get where he is in “A Gentleman’s Fate”. You will understand why Scarlett Montgomery is so very important to Donovan and how they got to this point. AJ Linn is a master at mind games and playing with your heart. So buckle up for the ride, it is one worth taking.

That being said, I have waited patiently for this book, for AJ Linn to share with us the fate of Donovan Hart and Scarlett Montgomery. We last saw Donovan and Scarlett on the balcony of their hotel in Venice, Italy having some…”fun” is a nice way to put it, as they entertained the tourists below. (smirks) You see, Scarlett woke up in a rather foul mood, must have been the bad dream about Ricardo, but Donovan was determined to rid her of that attitude. I would say he did. I would say he left them BOTH in a better mood, and some tourists below on the sidewalk too.

Do you remember the phone call Donovan made to the travel agent during breakfast? Well…that is where “A Gentleman’s Fate” begins. With those secretive plans he made for Scarlett. But you know how Scarlett hates waiting for surprises.

“A Gentleman’s Fate” begins in Venice, Italy, where Donovan has taken Scarlett to have some time alone, a vacation of sorts. Venice is very special to Donovan. Being there brings back memories of when he was a child with his parents. His beloved mother, how he misses her so. He also drops the idea on Scarlett that he would like to live in Venice someday, maybe after retiring. He and Scarlett are ready to embark on a new chapter of their life as she just asked him to marry her, again, sort of. Donovan, the ever romantic at heart, would do ANYTHING for this girl, his girl, the one he believes to be his unico vero amore, his one true love. All Donovan wants is a love like his parents had. Is that too much to ask for? Will he find it in Scarlett though? Or is there another girl for him?

So Donovan made some “plans” but as the night progresses he realizes he might want to cancel those plans, based on the way Scarlett is acting and what his gut is telling him. But Scarlett has a different idea. She wants to see her surprise, and when she gets to the destination and sees what Donovan had arranged, she, well, you might be shocked by her reaction. I won’t give it away. Warning: roller coaster ride beginning, buckle up, here we go.

The story plays out from there. How did Scarlett react when she found out what plans Donovan made? Should he have trusted his gut and taken her back to the hotel room? But…was this all in his destino, in his destiny? Tighten those seatbelts.

Some characters from the previous books are still central to Donavan’s life like Jared, Lily, Reggie, Dawn and his father, Bruce. In this book we learn more about Bruce and see a different side to him as he has emerged from the rock he crawled under, thanks to Shari. Bruce returns in a much stronger frame of mind and determined to get back to the living and to work. He thinks it is time to visit LaFuga Hotel. Yes, panic should be setting in right now. If you read the first three books you know that the LaFuga Hotel and The Underground are on the same property and when Bruce decides to tour the hotel and see what Donovan has made of the place, well, hold on tight. Welcome to the Underground… That’s all I need to say because the roller coaster is taking a dive.

So Donovan is left with the aftermath of his father and the tour of the property that they take together. I will not spoil any of that for the reader, it is written too well to give it away. But you know how hot-headed Donovan can be, right? The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. And remember HOW Shari met Donovan? Yep, Pandora’s box is about to be opened.

While Donovan has Scarlett and his dad to contend with, thank God he has Patrice who always bails him out. She might be the only person he CAN count on. She is like the seatbelt on this ride. She is dependable and always there. At times they act like brother and sister and at times I wonder if they could ever find themselves as lovers. It is refreshing that Donovan can be himself with Patrice, confide in her and rely on her, share a cookie and grilled cheese with her. Their dialogue is hysterical, I find myself laughing at the two of them when they interact, especially when Patrice is snarky and Donovan tries to push her buttons which he does so well in this book. Sometimes the sentences are only one or two words, like “asshole” and “I know” but it cracks me up to read their dialogue. I thoroughly enjoyed Donovan and Patrice in this book.

Donovan is a strong character and so well written. He is predicable at times because he is a man in love, willing to do anything for his girl. Unpredictable at times because he is human and feels pain and rejection as well. You cheer for him and Scarlett and you want to see them win in the end. Hasn’t he lost enough when he lost his mother? He has stood by Scarlett time and time again because he believes she is his unico vero amore but destino might not agree with him. Or does it? Only AJ Linn can tell.

AJ Linn has written another amazing book. I found myself on the streets of Venice watching Scarlett and Donovan walk by, or at the diner watching Donovan and Patrice have Key Lime Pie. His writing is so rich and inviting that I can FEEL the story, the emotions of the characters and the raw hurt sometimes felt by them as well. I find my heartbeat racing and my palms sweating while waiting for certain words to appear on the page, and sometimes those words don’t. The rollercoaster takes another turn or dip. But that’s what makes an AJ Linn book so good, it’s unpredictable. Just when you think you have the story figured out you find out that you don’t.

“A Gentleman’s Fate” left me wondering about SO many things, having so many questions which means there are many doors open for more stories about Donovan and Scarlett. I can’t wait to see where the next story takes us. I enjoy the roller coaster ride with an AJ Linn book because you sit on the edge of your seat waiting for the next twist and turn knowing that it is never what you expect. The brilliance of the author’s writing shines in this book. One of his best books yet. Absolutely!
