About the Author

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She’s frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn’t ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

My Review:

Sometimes love can change a person. Even the man with the darkest past.

This is book two in the series. You must read the first one as well as a short novella before, to truly understand the story line.

Emma, the sweet and innocent librarian has a past of her own. One that has molded who she is today but not as dark as Gavin’s. So they both have demons to slay before finding their castles.

We left off in book one hanging on a cliff with a shred of rope, no just kidding. It wasn’t THAT bad but I wanted to scream at Kendall for the way she ended the first book. So now we have our conclusions and the story just gets better. Not only are their dragons to slay there are huge dark forests to trudge through. These poor characters. Does love win out?

But in the end, Gavin finds his glass encrusted heart has warmed up to someone and the past hasn’t darkened his future. Thanks to Emma. The glass breaker. The sunshine. The princess in the castle. But the struggle to get there isn’t a pleasant one.

One major change in the story is Cooper. While Cooper did a good thing by forcing Emma on Gavin, he now struggles with the fall out and hopefully he lands on his feet without injury. His story is next I think.

Kendall writes steamy love stories with erotica mixed in so well. Each love scene is well designed and doesn’t fell like it is the same as last time. The passion and heat are new and sensual. You can almost feel like you are in the scene feeling the desire and lust between the two characters. Always a fan of Kendall’s erotic novels. She writes them so well. Desire. Passion. Heat. Love. She’s nails it all!

Q&A WITH Robbie Cox

Behind the Mask is a spinoff from Come Halloween, a paranormal romance. Is this story also a paranormal romance?

It’s more of a companion story than a spinoff. It takes place during the same time frame as Come Halloween, giving us the events in Emma’s life and the buildup to the party she was so excited about. It’s not paranormal in anyway, although the coffee shop conversations happen in both books.

What attracted you to pull the story of Emma out of your previous book, Come Halloween?

Emma just seemed spunky. Plus she was so gung-ho about this Halloween party that I just needed to see if she had her fantasy come true.

Where do you most often find inspiration for the stories you write?

On Behind the Mask, the inspiration came from writing Come Halloween. However, most of my stories are based on the what-ifs I see happen around me. I look at people and try to figure out their story. In Come Halloween, I just loved the history and folklore of Savannah and really wanted to put a story of witches there.

What are you reading (or what was the last book you read)?

I’ve been working a story for the Sassy Ever After world of Milly Taiden, so I’ve been reading a lot of the books based in that world. Right now, I’m reading one by Gracen Miller called Kissing Sassy.

Are there any genres you haven’t written in yet that you’d like to explore someday?

I have ideas for stories in every genre. I am working on some mystery stories with unique detectives, which is turning out to be a lot of fun. Plus, I want to combine more genres, like paranormal with mystery or detective stories.

What are your favorite genres (or romance sub-genres) to read?

Fantasy is my go-to genre to read and I love Terry Brooks. He actually is the reason I started writing way back when. Other than that, any genre is great as long as the story is solid.

While writing in one genre, do you read in the same genre during that time?

I do. I can separate my reading and my writing pretty well, which is probably why I can write so many stories at once in so many genres.

“About time!” the older lady shouted.

“Is Harper back?” I asked, handing the bags to the blushing redhead.

I took her hand, pulling her to a stop. “Harper.”

“Taylor?” Her hair flew in her mouth when she turned, and she drew her finger across her cheek to get it out.

What was I supposed to tell her again? That I knew we’d interviewed her. That I didn’t give her the job despite her having a leg up on everyone else we saw.

But was I contrite? Accusatory? Was I just going to relay information? What did I want out of her after I told her I knew?

“Thank you for helping today,” she said. “If you’d asked me when we met, ‘Would Taylor Harden help clean the factory?’ I would have said, ‘No, not for any reason.’ But there you were. Pushing a broom. Scooping up shit. Not being an asshole.”

“My watch was at stake.”

“Yeah. Whatever. You can say what you want to keep your reputation as a shithead intact.”

“You know you do.”

I did know it, and I reveled in it.

She faced me and put her other hand out. I took it, holding both hands between us. I couldn’t help it.

“Well, you guys are such a bunch of sad sacks I had to help. And let me tell you, every guy in Barrington has a little asshole in him. Trust me. I’ve played pool with them.”

“I want to say…” She stopped herself as if she really didn’t want to say. “Let’s get together tonight and get you another decryption code. But… saying this is stupid.” She bit her lip.
